After helping with the immediate relief work in the Tsunami affected area of the Nagai District, TCT provided drinking water in the villages, which faced extreme drinking water shortage after the Tsunami in Dec 2004.
TCT implemented the project in partnership with Thirumalai Chemicals Ltd, Theosophical Order of Service (TOS) and Grundfos Pumps, who volunteered to be part of the project.
TCT organized a widespread campaign on ‘Safe drinking water’ in the affected communities to educate the people. TCT collaborated with the village Panchayats and the District Administration covered by a memorandum of understanding that stated that it would limit its role to technical support, and transfer management to local communities. Water committees were formed and local girls were selected and trained to operate the water plants. Reverse Osmosis (RO) Plants were installed in the villages of Akkaraipettai, Kuttinandiyur, Chandrapadi, Nagore Pattinacherry and Nambiyar Nagar, and about 2,000 households benefited from this project
The project was handed over to the District Apex Water Committee under the supervision of the District Collector.
